The band was founded by Jonah Matranga, formerly of Far and later known for his solo work as onelinedrawing. Gratitude formed after Fars breakup and was intended as a fresh, more melodic yet still emotionally intense project. They released a single self titled album in 2003 on Atlantic Records and toured with bands like Jimmy Eat World and Thursday.
