The red paint is obviously very old and not the original color of the box it looks like there might be a layer of green and a layer of white underneath. The red does look like a good German primer color. In short, I am not sure if the red paint is post war or a wartime attempt to refurbish it. Many items painted in 1945 were just painted primer red.
